2015 - Our participation in the shoe box was a great success as our church contributed 168 shoe boxes. As we are a drop off center, a total of 404 shoe boxes were delivered to Boardman, OH. We are part of the Northeast Ohio region for Operation Christmas Child where, in 2015, the total was 17,222 shoe boxes. We received confirmation that one of our shoe boxes were delivered to Columbia.
2016 - Wayland Community Church filled 222 shoe boxes. They were processed at the Boone, NC center Wednesday, December 7. The very next day they were shipped to South Sudan in East-Central Africa, an extremely poor country that has extreme ethnic-related violence and the peoples hope is dying with a very bleak looking future.
2017 - We have begun our mission of collecting items. It's never too early to shop for items for the shoe boxes. Recent purchases from Family Dollar included 10 sets of 4 pairs of gloves for .75, hats for .50 and Valentine type toys for less than $1.00. Shop second hand stores and you will find new toys like Beanie Babies with the price tags still attached. This year they are not allowing candy of any kind or toothpaste. Those have been valuable items in the past, however this is the first year they are not allowed. Items you can save from your home include the containers in which you purchase cake icing. The container and the lid are used to hold small items and, in many poor countries, that is the only drinking cup or bowl a child may have. Clear prescription medicine bottles are perfect to make sewing kits with thread, needles and safety pins. They can also be used to make fishing kits with hooks, line and sinkers. Check out Operation Christmas Child sites on Facebook for some great ideas.
